The GlobetrotterGuide

Staying connected to family and the world shouldn't be a struggle. This guide ranks our database of 100 cities by airport access β€” drive time to the nearest hub, the quality of its connections, and how easily an active retiree can actually get where they're going.

✈️ 100 Cities Scored
πŸ“ Drive Time to Hub
πŸ—“ May 2026
What we looked for: three things, rolled into one 0–10 score β€” how far you drive to the nearest commercial airport, the quality and frequency of that airport's connections (airlines, nonstop destinations, hub status), and backup options within reach. A 10 means a major international hub minutes away; a 3 means limited routes and a long drive to meaningful connections. Scores come from the database; the airport detail in each card is supporting color.

Before You Scroll

Four things to know about airport access in retirement.

1
Florida and Texas dominate the top. Tampa, Fort Worth, and Miami anchor the elite tier with world-class hubs, and Delray Beach's three-airport access (PBI, FLL, MIA) is unmatched anywhere in the database. Warm weather plus deep connectivity is a rare combination, and the Sun Belt has it.
2
The mountain trade-off is the sharpest in the database. Park City (SLC 35 min) and Jackson Hole (remarkable nonstops for its size) score well, but Sedona, Durango, Flagstaff, and Prescott all sit at 3. If you're drawn to the mountain Southwest and travel often, this is the gap that matters most.
3
A few small cities punch far above their weight. Nashua reaches both Manchester and Boston Logan; Jackson Hole has remarkable nonstop service for a remote valley; Fayetteville rides corporate demand from Walmart and Tyson. Size doesn't always predict connectivity.
4
Not all airports are equal β€” and "has an airport" isn't the question. A true hub like DFW, TPA, or LAS offers hundreds of nonstops; a regional field like Asheville or Chattanooga leaves you one connection from everywhere, usually through Atlanta or Charlotte. Over years of travel, that difference compounds.
